Long Lee Primary School head teacher Louise Smith has won high praise.

Tribute was paid by Ofsted's chief inspector for education, children's services and skills, Christine Gilbert, at a conference in Bradford recognising outstanding schools and colleges across the north of England.

Long Lee school, which was awarded a coveted "outstanding" grade by Ofsted, has pioneered an inclusive approach to school governance by choosing pupil-governors and setting up an office run by the youngsters themselves.

Mrs Smith said: "The children are fully involved in our planning processes. Under the supervision of a teaching assistant, they plan activities, competitions and quizzes, run an advice centre and even organise their own bank at the school. It's had a massive impact in encouraging self-confidence as well as introducing them to important life skills at an early age.

"We've also put together a best practice tool kit so that other schools can replicate our ideas."

She added: "It's greatly encouraging to see that our efforts are being recognised - it's a bit like the Oscars of education. It's good too that our contributions and views are being actively taken on board by Ofsted.

"The conference was also an excellent opportunity to meet colleagues from across the north, celebrate our achievements and share good practice."
