SKIPTON MP Julian Smith is supporting former chancellor Rishi Sunak in the race to become the new leader of the Conservative Party and the next Prime Minister.
Mr Smith last night tweeted: "Very pleased that Rishi Sunak has come has come through parliament stage with highest support among colleagues.
"I’m backing him as best-placed to unite and lead our country in challenging times. I'm also backing him because I believe he can help restore trust."
Mr Sunak, MP for Richmondshire, and foreign secretary Liz Truss, member for South West Norfolk, are the final two candidates hoping to become leader of the Conservatives. It follows five rounds of voting by Conservative MPs.
Who wins is now up the Conservative Party's around 160,000 members. Ballots will be posted out to members and are due to arrive early in August. The winner will be announced on September 5.
