Street wardens are set for another reprieve after Bradford Council's executive agreed to keep a transitional service in place for up to a year.

It follows discussions over who will be responsible for their duties when the current service in Keighley and Bradford ends. Last year during the council's budget process, funding was cut from April 2007, but after an outcry the wardens were reinstated for a year.

This time, council leader Kris Hopkins is looking to find up to £500,000 to keep the wardens going in the 2008/9 budget.

A report to the executive detailed that the best way to ensure visible reassurance and enforcement was through an enhanced police community support officer service, together with additional work by other council departments.

From June the council will take over responsibility for parking enforcement from the police and it is looking to take on 47 attendants.

The 130 PCSOs in the district would then be given additional powers to take over some of the wardens' duties.

The report says the police have agreed in principle to take a more prominent role in enforcement for environmental offences and the council's deputy chief executive, Jo Miller, is authorised to come to an agreement with the police.
