Two former teachers at the former Brontë Middle School are about to chalk-up a place in history.

And ex-pupils at the Keighley school, which became redundant during the shake-up from a three to two-tier education system about seven years ago, will decide which staff should make the grade.

Two streets at a housing development planned for the Oakworth Road site will be named after one-time teachers there.

And former pupils are being invited to vote for their choice from shortlists of candidates.

The venture will also raise money for Manorlands, the Oxenhope Sue Ryder Care hospice. People will make a donation as they vote.

Two shortlists have been drawn up, covering different eras in the school's history, and the person from each who has the most money donated in their name will be selected.

The pre-1984 shortlist comprises Mrs Leah Adkins/Skirrow, Ken Dyson, Ray Garner, Mrs Ann Peckett and the late L George Skirrow, Ken Grainger and Edward Anderton.

The post-1984 line up is David Benn, Mrs Julie Benn, Paul Buckley, Rod Fletcher, Bob Grainger and Paul Dickson.

Two other teachers, Jack Duffin and Mrs Ann Phillipson, also made the shortlists but were unable to be included in the vote due to street names in the Bradford district already carrying their names.

Andrew Wood - fundraiser at Manorlands, which is co-organising the venture with Worth Valley Young Farmers Club - said the project had sparked huge interest among former Brontë teachers and pupils.

He added there were three ways in which people could vote.

"We would prefer people to vote online at justgiving.com/bronteteachers, where a description is provided of each teacher. However, there are a number of pubs and shops in the Brontë School area where people can vote and people can send the name of their favourite along with a donation by post to Manorlands."

Persimmon Homes, which is to develop the Brontë site, has promised to match funds raised through the project.

The results of the vote will be announced at a Brontë reunion disco, at Oakbank School, on April 5.

Tickets for the event will be available soon.
