When police visited David Myers's flat in Keighley, they found two cannabis plants.
Officers had arrested the 28-year-old on another issue and came across the plants when searching his home, Bingley Magistrates were told.
One plant was found growing in a kitchen cupboard and another in the hall.
Glen Chivers, for Myers, said his client grew the plants for his own use because it was cheaper then drinking alcohol.
Myers, of Leylands House, Parkwood Rise, who pleaded guilty to cultivating cannabis on February 7, was fined £50 and ordered to pay £30 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
