A SEARCH has begun for young 'community champions' to star in a major new Keighley event.
Organisers of Keighley Carnival are seeking nominations for youngsters from the area who have faced adversity or contributed to the community, particularly during the pandemic.
Each child will receive a certificate – and the winners will take part in a carnival parade.
Nominations can be made via the event website, at keighleycarnival.co.uk.
Those behind the carnival – which takes place on Saturday, September 10 – say the event will have "traditional elements of a gala – but with a modern twist".
It will be themed on The Greatest Showman.
The parade will set off from Church Green at 12.30pm.
"The modern-day celebration of community champions is in the tradition of gala kings and queens," said a spokesperson.
"We are working hard to produce an exciting parade, which will include a large puppeteer elephant!"
The procession will make its way to Victoria Park, where there will be a Marshalls funfair, a stage show featuring local bands, a variety of market stalls, food and amusements.
Schools are being encouraged to participate; children will be making costumes representing characters from The Greatest Showman and flags.
A gala committee that formed prior to the pandemic to help raise funds for charity Living Lights, which runs a foodbank and outreach service, reformed to create the carnival.
"The Greatest Showman theme was chosen for the event as it's about inclusiveness and it is hoped members of Keighley's diverse communities will enjoy the day together," says Patrick McDonnell, founder and director of Living Lights and a carnival committee member.
"Entry to the event is free, and tokens will be on sale on the day for funfair rides."
Funds raised through the carnival will go towards the work of Living Lights, Keighley-based small animal rescue Furever Loved and Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice Manorlands.
Mr McDonnell said: "The committee is hoping that local churches, schools and businesses will get behind the fundraising as well. We're keen for the community to become involved to make this a great day for Keighley."
Mr McDonnell chaired the carnival committee but handed over the role – to Irena Harrison – to focus more on his work with Living Lights, which is seeing increasing demand from needy families.
