ORGANISERS of Keighley's third annual Pride Gala have hailed the event as a huge success.

Hundreds of people descended on Cougar Park yesterday to enjoy a range of activities and entertainment.

Outside there were craft and information stalls, and performances from Haworth Band, the Gay Abandon choir and Keighley percussionists Jamba Samba.

And in the Hall of Fame bar area, the line-up included drag queen Dragalicious and evening headliners Marigold Addams, Bibi Taylor and Jane Fraser.

"It was wonderful to see such a celebration of love and inclusivity," said David Shaw, of Keighley Pride.

"This year is the 50th anniversary of the UK’s first Pride parade – and it was the third Pride event in Keighley.

"Pride is an affirmation and a celebration for LGBTQIA+ people and our allies. It is an invitation to the wider community – we’re here, we’re part of you, let’s value that. And it is a message to anyone confused, perhaps struggling, with their own sexuality or gender identity – you are not alone, you are valued, you are loved."

VIP guests at the event included town mayor Councillor Luke Maunsell and MP Robbie Moore, who took part in activities and posed for photos with rainbow-clad members of the public.

Mr Shaw added: "It is a tremendous amount of hard work to organise the annual gala, and our small committee and team of volunteers couldn't do this alone. Without the backing of sponsors Keighley Town Council and Keighley Cougars, we could not have staged the event.

"We also very much appreciate the Cavendish Hotel in Keighley stepping up to host and organise the 'after party'. Operator Lorna Bennett won the backing of Admiral Taverns to stage the after party, and we thank them both for supporting us."

Cllr Maunsell paid tribute to the gala and its organisers.

He added: "I am so proud that Keighley Town Council financially backed the event and continues to promote the diversity we have in this amazing town."

The gala is the headline event on the Keighley Pride calendar.

Other forthcoming activities include a Pride Stride walk, taking in Sunnydale and the Glen in East Morton, on September 17 as part of Keighley Walks 2022. People should meet at the Busfeild Arms in the village at 11am.

Also, a major social event is to be held in November. More details will appear on the Keighley Pride Facebook page and at keighleypride.org.
