Plans have been unveiled for a new canopy at Keighley Market Hall.

The glass-fronted structure will be built on the pedestrianised area in front of the current entrance in Low Street.

The scheme forms part of a phased redevelopment of the hall, including work to the roof, new flooring and improvements to lighting, ventilation and the stalls.

The market will continue to trade while work is carried out.

Initially the canopy, for which planning permission is now being sought, would be used as temporary accommodation by stallholders displaced during the refurbishment of the hall. It will then serve as a permanent trading area.

Part of the glazing will open out to offer a terrace area for summer use.

Steps and a ramp will provide access and there will be automatic doors to the main entrance structure and the hall itself.

Bradford Council said that if the scheme was approved work should start in the summer.

Traders at the market have welcomed the plans.

Keighley's National Market Traders Federation said the new entrance would greatly enhance the Market Hall aesthetically.

A spokesman added: "It will give the customers a pleasant seating and shopping environment and will make the market warmer in winter. It marks the start of the refurbishment and we are looking forward to its completion.

"It is a very positive time for the market, where we have some new quality traders moving in and it will be full within the next couple of weeks."
