A woman suspected John Houldsworth was drunk when he bought lager at a filling station and then dropped several cans at the side of his car on the forecourt, Bingley Magistrates were told.

She reported him to police.

Houldsworth, 56, of Parkwood Street, Keighley, admitted driving his red Escort to a pub car park. He pleaded guilty on Tuesday to drink-driving and driving without a licence and was banned for 16 months and fined £40. He had to pay £40 towards court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Magistates heard that he had bought 24 cans at the Total filling station and then dropped them over the floor near his car.

The police then found him with his vehicle in the Shoulder of Mutton pub car park fumbling with the cans of lager.

A breath test revealed he was not quite twice over the drink-driving limit.

Houldsworth said he had a drink with a friend after helping him move home and bought the cans for someone who was going to a party.
