A children's health club in Bracken Bank, Keighley, has proved so popular it has had to be split into two.

Each member of Well Wednesday can now only meet once a fortnight. The 40-plus youngsters' activities include cooking healthy meals, fitness, cycling and gardening.

Group leaders include Steve Thorpe, who runs the award-winning Haworth Primary School gardening club.

Well Wednesday was started by Bracken Bank development worker Alison Robinson at the local community centre.

The group moved to the estate's Worth Valley Primary School to make use of its facilities.

Alison said last October's move trebled the membership, with too many children to cater for at the same time.

Club member Evie Gaddas said her favourite club activities were digging and eating apples and carrots.

Fellow member Cameron Wilson said: "You get to do a lot of things like going up a climbing wall and getting treats."

In the future Alison hopes to start a similar group for pupils at nearby Ingrow Primary School.

The Bracken Bank group originally did only healthy cooking but now provides fitness sessions.

During the half-term holidays members went cycling with Just Ride co-ordinator Richard Taylor.

Mr Thorpe attends each week along with three giant hand puppets he uses to put across the healthy eating message.

During the winter he helped club members make hanging baskets and plant cacti.

As the weather gets better the children will plant fruit trees and grow vegetables from seeds in the school garden.

Bracken Bank Community Association provides staffing for Well Wednesday, while Keighley Healthy Living Network provides food and drinks.
