Some Sutton residents have spoken out about a lack of recycling facilities in the village.

People living in certain areas have to put all their waste into one bin because they are not provided with recycling bins for plastic or glass.

For residents of The Poplars and surrounding streets the only waste that gets picked up separately for recycling is newspaper.

Sutton resident Ted Whitlock said that it was ridiculous that at a time when people were being encouraged to recycle as much as possible, some residents had not been given the opportunity.

He said: "They're crying out for things to be recycled and we should all be able to do our bit to reduce our carbon footprint."

He added: "All the rubbish goes into a waste lorry and will be put on landfill."

Mr Whitlock said that he did not understand why some homes in Sutton were not provided with recycling bins, when others were.

He believes there are places in the village where a communal recycling bin could be put.

Neil Whitaker, chairman of Sutton Parish Council, said that there were certain areas in the village that were not visited by the recycling lorry but that was because the lorry could not reach them.

He said: "It's a strange thing but it's all to do with factors like having enough turning space. It causes a real minefield of problems."

Councillor Whitaker said a lot of homes in the village were provided with bins for recycling glass, tins and garden waste.

He also said that there were communal recycling facilities in Cross Hills, which a lot of residents used.

He added: "The situation is Sutton has improved a lot and continues to improve."
