A campaign to encourage the district's population to get active and healthy is celebrating a milestone.

The b-active scheme, launched by Bradford Council in the summer of 2003, has notched-up its 10 millionth customer. And council leader Councillor Kris Hopkins presented the lucky person - retired teacher Barbara Bailey - with a certificate and a year's "Clubactive" membership, in a ceremony at Keighley Leisure Centre, on Friday.

"Attracting 10 million customers in such a short space of time is an incredible achievement and shows exactly how successful the b-active campaign has been," said Cllr Hopkins.

"It is really important that all our residents try to make time for some sort of physical activity in their lives and we hope even more will pay our sports centres a visit and be active."

Steve Warner, the council's head of sport and leisure, said: "When we launched our b-active campaign nearly five years ago our aim was to increase the number of people regularly taking part in physical activity and sport but we did not think we would attract 10 million visitors so quickly.

"Through the campaign we have not only provided more opportunities for residents to take part and get involved but also raised awareness of the benefits that regular participation can bring.

"The success of the campaign has been largely due to a sustained investment in our leisure facilities, along with strong support from our key partners, and we fully intend to build on that success over the next five years."

More than two million people a year have enjoyed taking a dip at council-owned swimming pools or having a workout in sports centres, which have seen more than £16 million invested in them.

Mrs Bailey, 63, of Scott Lane West, in Riddlesden, has been using the Keighley gym about four times a week for 18 months.

"It has helped me control my metabolism because I have an under active thyroid," she said.
