A couple have been married for 60 years today.

Donald and Lucy Sands, of Haworth, will officially celebrate their diamond wedding anniversary on Saturday with a gathering of relatives and close friends.

Mrs Sands, 86, first met her husband at a staff dance at the old Keighley swimming baths, in Albert Street.

They were married at Haworth Parish Church and have one son, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Mr Sands was in the Royal Navy during the Second World War, working in ships' boiler rooms.

He served in the Atlantic theatre for 18 months before being shifted to the Mediterranean. The last ship he served on was HMS Gloxinia, a corvette.

After the war he worked for George Hattersley and Sons Ltd. finishing as a foundry manager when the firm closed in 1980.

He then became a maintenance superintendent at Oakbank School, where he worked until his retirement.

Mrs Sands said she felt fortunate that they were still in good health, though it did not seem as if 60 years had passed.

The couple have lived in Lawcliffe Crescent, since 1960.
