Lessons were disrupted at Sutton C of E School as the children had to dive under their desks to shelter when air raid sirens went off.

Class three re-enacted part of the school's history when they held an evacuee day to bring their topic, children during the Second World War, to life.

Teacher Paula Margetson said that she decided to hold the enrichment and enjoyment day to pull together lots of the different areas the children had studied.

As well as being dressed like they were in the 1940s, the children were taught as they would have been during the war.

Desks were set out in rows, Miss Margetson wrote on an old chalk board and students were taught mental arithmetic and handwriting.

Miss Margetson said: "The children and staff all dressed as evacuees and all the children had gas mask boxes to carry around with them.

"The children wrote with ink pens and worked in complete silence all day."

The children were pretending that they'd been evacuated to the school from cities which had been bombed.

"During the war children really were evacuated to Sutton," added Miss Margetson.

"We were re-enacting a bit of the school's history. They really put themselves into character.

"The children really benefited and learnt a lot about how they would have been taught.

"It made them appreciate how lucky they are today."
