Young model railway fans received dream prizes during an exhibition at the weekend.

They will be able to make behind-the-scenes visits to full-size railways after creating their own model railway.

Junior members of Keighley Model Railway Club were encouraged to make a layout for the club's annual show.

Railway officials were invited to the Victoria Hall event to judge the best model buildings on the layout.

Club publicity officer Mick McNamara was delighted that the representatives also provided prizes.

The top prize, provided by Northern Rail, was a ride around West Yorkshire in the cab of an electric train.

The second prize, provided by Network Rail, was a visit to a working signal box.

Runners-up received free tickets for the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway.

Mr McNamara said adults at the club were envious of the prizes on offer to their younger counterparts.

He said: "These are the sort of things that nobody ever gets to do.

"We've really pushed the juniors this year to do their own layout."

Mr McNamara said the annual exhibition was a success with slightly more people attending than last year.

The club successfully joined its Mill Street layout to the Maidenhaiste layout from Kendal Model Railway Club.

Members had to build an extra corner of track to connect the two layouts, complete with scenery and buildings.

Jack Sharples won the cab ride and Stanley Ashworth won the signal box visit.

All the juniors received Keighley and Worth Valley Railway tickets and bags of Network Rail and Northern Rail goodies.

Other trophy winners: best overall layout, judged by Keighley town mayor Brian Hudson, Nettlecoombe; best small layout, judged by ex-mayor Graham Mitchell, Woodhead; best layout, judged by public, Nettlecoombe; Best scenic feature, Porth Erin; Harold Williamson Trophy awarded to club member who has contributed most over the year, Mick McNamara.
