A ring donated by a Keighley jeweller raised £3,600 when it went under the hammer at a charity auction.

The two-carat diamond cluster ring was among various lots that together raised £33,500 for Martin House Children's Hospice, at Boston Spa.

The auction was part of the hospice's annual glitter ball, at the Majestic Hotel, in Harrogate, which in total raised £55,700. This year's event, attended by 400 guests, celebrated the hospice's 21st anniversary.

The ring - valued at £3,200 - was donated by Liam McQuaid, owner of Raffles Jewellers, in Brunswick Arcade, Keighley.

"There was a tense bidding war between two couples and I was over the moon with the amount it raised," said Liam. "It was a tremendous night and everyone was very generous."

He began fundraising for the hospice in tribute to the care it provided to his terminally ill son, who spent the final days of his life there.

Little Niall, Liam's youngest son, was born with severe brain damage and died aged just seven weeks.

Liam's fundraising efforts have so far coined in £11,200. Last September he completed the Great North Run, a feat he hopes to repeat this year.
