Last week more smokers around Keighley were inspired to quit cigarettes than on any other day of the year.

No Smoking Day came to Keighley Market Hall on March 12 to urge nicotine addicts around the town to quit the fags and concentrate on getting fit instead. It is now reported as being the most popular day for quitting cigarettes even before New Year's resolutions on January 1.

Stop Smoking service workers from the Bradford and Airedale Teaching Primary Care Trust were out in force to provide advice and support on how to give up. Members of the b-active campaign also showed residents how to get fit and active without fags.

Gail Stringer, a health promotion specialist, said: "In Bradford and Airedale, 29 per cent of adults smoke and research shows that over two thirds of them would like to stop - so No Smoking Day is a great opportunity to take up the challenge.

"By using the support available on No Smoking Day and throughout the year, people can increase their chance of stopping smoking successfully by up to four times."

Activities ran throughout the day and included the chance to win vouchers for swimming and taster sessions for exercise classes and the gym. To find out how to quit smoking call the stop smoking service on 01274 363559 or contact your GP service.
