Oakbank School has emerged top of the district's Scrapheap Challenge.

A team of pupils from the Keighley school beat competition from across Bradford to win in the advanced category of the Rotary clubs' version of the hit television programme.

Schools were invited to enter teams in foundation, intermediate and advanced categories to complete a task that would be revealed on the day of the tournament.

More than 28 teams of pupils, aged 12-18, arrived at Victoria Hall, in Keighley, for the day-long competition and discovered their challenge would be to build a bridge strong enough to hold a one kilogram bag of sugar.

The higher up the age categories, the more requirements were demanded of the bridge and each was tested at the end of the day in front of a panel of Rotary Club judges.

A team of year 12 Oakbank pupils won in the advanced category (aged 16-plus), while Greenhead High School came second in the intermediate category (14-16), which was topped by Grange Technology College.

Beckfoot School won in the foundation category (12-14).

Holy Family School, in Keighley, also took part in the competition, which aimed to encourage students to generate enthusiasm for design and technology.

Vice-president of Keighley Rotary Club Liz Balding said: "All the teams put so much effort into it and all the bridges were quite different and a lot had spent a lot of time on them."
