More than 160 households in Haworth were hit by a power cut this morning.

A spokeswoman for Yorkshire Electricity Distribution UK (YEDL) said its workers had identified a fault in an overhead power line and had isolated the affected area.

She said 167 homes in the Haworth area had been hit and added that the firm was aiming to restore supplies by noon today.

Haworth, Cross Roads and Stanbury Parish Council chairman, Councillor Peter Hill, who lives in Mytholmes Lane, said the power to his home had been interrupted three times from 1.30am onwards.

He added he understood the computers at the village medical centre were also affected.

He said calls to an electricity number listed in the phonebook only got through to a recorded message.

He said Haworth had been hit by frequent power cuts since December and deserved a much better service.

"We enjoy the 1940s Weekend here but we don't want to go back to a wartime electricity supply," he added.

"They should be able to keep the supply going in this day and age - they charge us enough for it."

The YEDL spokeswoman said ongoing power supply problems in the village could have multiple causes, including high winds blowing debris onto power lines.

"It has been a very windy winter," she said. "We do always monitor problems or potential interruptions to overhead power networks.

"We do put measures in place to reduce interruptions to the supply."
