Two detectives whose dogged determination to solve an armed robbery at a bingo hall have been honoured.

The story of their expertise was told at the Bradford North and Keighley Divisional police presentation evening last week.

Detective Sergeant Ben McDonald and Detective Constable Gareth Hamer were given awards for their investigative expertise, dogged determination and witness care in securing the conviction of three people involved in an armed robbery at Gala Bingo, Alice Street, Keighley, last April.

Police Sgt Paul Robinson was also honoured for his contribution towards developing strong community links with minority groups within the Keighley Division; the setting up and managing of the Divisional Scrutiny and Hate Crime Panel and Keighley Community Advisory ensuring community cohesion and engagement at the highest level.

PCSO Lee Mitchell received an award for "exceptional performance" over the past year with a high number of detentions for crime and anti-social behaviour.

In all, about 90 officers, support staff, PCSOs and members of the public received awards for acts of bravery, tenacity and dedication to duty.

The ceremony was held at the Dubrovnik Hotel on Oak Avenue, Bradford, and was attended by officers as well as their families.

Commenting on the awards Chief Constable Sir Norman Bettison told the audience: "I am immensely proud of the job that is done by West Yorkshire Police.

"West Yorkshire Police is made up of police officers, support staff, PCSOs, special constables and volunteers who are prepared to go the extra mile.

"But what makes it worth doing is when somebody says thank you', when somebody rewards the actions that are done. That is what tonight is about."

Among the many officers and members of the public awarded at the ceremony were Detective Sergeant Phil Jagger, Detective Constable Lyndsey Wakeling, Detective Constable Gilligan Ashdown and Police Constable Imran Haider.

They were commended for the considerable efforts made and professionalism displayed in investigating the disappearance of two young children in July 2007 who were subsequently found safe and returned to their family.

Police Constable Alan Menzies and Police Constable David Turner were awarded for courageously tackling and arresting a bloodstained male believed to be in possession of a knife, who was attempting to make his escape from the scene of a murder.

Police Constable Deborah Ramsay and Police Constable Jennifer Norris were awarded for professionalism and devotion in the execution of duty when attempting to preserve life in terrible and testing circumstances.

Police Constable Mark Pickles and Police Constable Ben Pearson were awarded for their bravery and professionalism while dealing with a man armed with a knife, intent on self harm by throwing himself from a bridge.
