Sister Grace Winterbottom, a midwife who worked in the Keighley district for nearly three decades, has died aged 95.

Grace (nee Field) was originally from Barnet and moved to Bolton in Lancashire when she was 12, following the death of her mother.

She trained as a nurse and volunteered with Queen Alexandra's Nursing Corps in the Second World War, serving in North Africa and Italy.

After returning to the UK, Grace trained to become a midwife and worked locally for 27 years.

She married Bob Winterbottom in 1954 and moved from Haworth to Crossflatts, where the couple became active members of the local Old People's Welfare Association. Grace organised trips and holidays for the members.

She was a regular worshipper at St Aidan's Church in Crossflatts, where her funeral service will take place tomorrow at 10am.

A friend commented: "Grace will be remembered as a wonderful human being and for her devotion to her fellow man. She will also be remembered as a loving grandmother and a very dear friend."
