A range of new outdoor recreational facilities has been formally launched at Oakworth Primary School.

It is the culmination of months of fundraising, carried out by the school to transform an expanse of bare, rough asphalt into a stimulating, educational play area.

Pupils can now learn about wildlife in an eco garden, relax in a specially designated quiet area, or let off steam using multi-purpose team sports apparatus.

There is also a trim trail, a greenhouse and thermoplastic markings on the ground for games such as snakes and ladders.

Resurfacing work began last summer and financial support was provided by the Bradford and Bingley bank, which gave £450, and Bradford Council's Green Schools in the Community fund, which gave £3,000.

Parents and local businesses donated plants, wood and soil for the eco garden.

The completed project was officially opened by Education Bradford managing director John Gaskin and Vivien Hall, who chairs the Bradford and Bingley community action team.

Deputy head teacher, Fiona Lidstone-Green, said: "The children think it's absolutely wonderful - we're very happy with it.

"It was members of the school council who started things off by telling us exactly what sort of facilities they wanted."

She offered her thanks to everyone who had donated items or given up their time to make the project a success.
