Eleven men were arrested after a dispute between two families escalated into a mass brawl.

Two people were injured during the street battle, in the Knowle Park area of Keighley.

Community tensions were sky high following the incident and flared up again following news that a car was damaged in the area on Tuesday night.

Police have stepped up patrols amid fears of further public unrest. Up to 15 people were involved in the fight, which occurred in the Queens Road area last week.

One of the injured men suffered head wounds while the other received injuries to his face. One casualty was taken to Airedale Hospital.

Insp Mark Allsop said: "The fight was between two groups of males in the area aged between 18 and 25 and we have contacted community leaders to help us to bring the situation under control.

"We stepped up patrols in the area to reassure the public and made house visits to some people to make sure there are no repercussions and further disputes."

Following the damage to a car in the Knowle Park area on Tuesday, Insp John Tatham said the police were pursuing all avenues of inquiry.

He said: "At this stage we are not sure if the incidents are linked but we are looking at that possibility. We tend to approach things with an open mind with a view to bringing some people to justice.

"We are getting in contact with community and council leaders with a view to keeping people calm and sending out the message that we are investigating as quickly and as thoroughly as we can."

Abdul Motin, a community worker at the Bangladeshi Community Association in Kensington Street, said people had come to him with concerns about spin-off disputes and there had been a bad atmosphere in the area.

He said: "It is a difficult one as you can imagine in any community when some people want to stay out of it but it affects us all, when arrests are made it creates tension for the whole area.

"It is not nice for any area to have a police presence, some people will take it as a positive thing but others as a negative."

The 11 arrested men have been released on police bail and investigations are ongoing.

Police are appealing for anyone with information about the incident on Monday, March 24, at about 6.30pm, or the car damage to contact Keighley CID on 01535 617080.
