A Cononley couple have celebrated their diamond wedding anniversary.

Ted and Morva Clelland were pen pals during the Second World War while Ted served in Burma.

A romance ensued on his return and they married in Chatham Register Office in 1948, following Ted's proposal on the cliffs of Dover. Ted spent 38 years in the printing trade and Morva worked for BT for 26 years before retiring to Cononley in 1986.

Morva, 79, said: "We can't imagine being without one another."

She has been an active member of the WI in Cononley for many years and said the couple had enjoyed every second of their time in the area. The couple celebrated their big day at a cottage in Clitheroe, where their family had organised a surprise party. Ted, 87, said: "It was beautiful, a real day to remember."

The couple have two children, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
