A KEIGHLEY vets has issued advice to help keep pets calm during the fireworks season.
Aireworth Vets says it's expecting a rise in calls from worried pet owners as Bonfire Night approaches.
Clinical director Peter O’Hagan says the loud bangs and sudden flashes of light can cause animals to become anxious or run away.
He recommends that cats and dogs are kept safely indoors during the fireworks period, and windows and doors shut.
Also, owners are advised to ensure their pets wear collars and tags and that microchips are up to date in case they do flee.
Mr O'Hagan said: "This can be a difficult time for pets and their owners, with the fireworks season stretching over several weeks.
"Dogs should not be left alone and even pets that have previously shown no fear can become sensitive.
"The biggest worry is that many pets will bolt through fear, so ensure doors and windows are shut.
"Providing a safe place where they can hide, like a den, is a good idea and there are also over-the-counter therapies that can help to keep them calm."
Other tips include close your curtains and turn up the TV or music to distract your pet.
