MORRISONS – which has a store in Worth Way, Keighley – is scrapping date labels from nearly 200 of its fresh fruit, vegetable and salad items.
The supermarket giant says the move is aimed at encouraging customers to use their own judgement over whether produce is good to eat after being bought and stored at home – helping to reduce food waste and save money.
A survey by the Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) found that UK households waste a total of 4.5 million tonnes of food a year, costing the average family £720. Fresh potatoes and carrots are amongst the most wasted produce items.
Damon Johnson, for Morrisons, says: "Now more than ever it’s important to help our customers reduce their food waste."
