A TOWN centre Christmas tree is currently out of action after it was "significantly damaged" by someone believed to have been trying to climb it.

The tree, located in Keighley's Town Hall Square, was vandalised over the weekend.

Engineers believe someone had attempted to climb it and, as a result, caused significant damage to a large section of lights which are now out of action.

Keighley Town Council says they are working as quickly as they can to fully assess the damage and get a timescale for the repair.

In 2021, the Council wanted to improve the festive light display in the Town Hall Square in response to the perceived view of the poor quality of lights within the town centre.

It worked with Festive Lights - Bradford Council's trading arm - to install a small limited display.

The old festive lighting was replaced with new features, including; LED lights in the surrounding trees, ice fall lights in the two large Birch trees and a 6.5m Cone Tree with multifunctional light settings.

A free Christmas tree was also sourced thanks to the work of two local business owners who secured a donation and fundraised.
