A WOMAN is paying a special tribute to her late dad – by walking 100 miles dressed as an elf!
Rebecca Craft's fundraiser is in support of Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice, Manorlands.
Her father, Brian Craft, was cared for by Manorlands before his death in August this year.
Rebecca, 40, says: "In dad's final weeks, the Sue Ryder nurses from the hospice’s community team came out to visit him at home to provide care and any specialist equipment we needed to make him more comfortable.
"Even after his death, they stayed in contact with our family and offered emotional support – we knew they were always there if we needed them.
"A lot of people in our family have received care from the hospice. So whilst walking in honour of my dad, I am thinking of them too.
"I’ve always said that the staff at the hospice are real angels on earth – and if by raising some money I can help them to support another family, then I'll do whatever I can.
"If my dad knew I was doing this he would think it was hilarious!"
Rebecca's idea of dressing as an elf was inspired by some treasured memories she shared with her dad.
"Dad knew that Elf was my favourite movie and he used to sit there laughing at me laughing at the film!" she says.
"He even sent me to New York so I could live the life of Buddy the Elf!
"With it being the festive period I thought walking 100 miles dressed as an elf this month would be a crazy but perfect challenge!"
Rebecca persuaded her sister, Vicky, to join her as a 'little helper'.
"The first few walks we did were hilly and hard work," she says.
"We then decided to stick to flatter routes, mainly along the canal. But I think if Buddy the Elf can get from the North Pole to New York, then I can walk 100 miles in honour of my dad!
"We’ve had some brilliant reactions from people when they’ve seen us out and about. On our first walk we went past a primary school as they were all finishing for the day and the children were very excited. Lots of people have been beeping their horns in support too, which is lovely and gives you a real boost."
