A FIRST-ever Winter Solstice Strider in support of Manorlands raised £10,000, the Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice has announced.
Over 350 runners and walkers took part in the event, which was held on the shortest day – December 21.
Donning head torches and with a number in costume, entrants made their way around a route following woodland trails through the St Ives estate at Harden.
People of all ages and abilities took part, and could choose to tackle a 10k or 5k course.
First home in the 10k was Mathew Warters, in a time of 40 minutes 43 seconds, and the first-placed finisher in the 5k was Bernie Bowden in 24 minutes 54.
The event was hosted by turf research company STRI Group, which is based on the estate. Support was provided by Bingley St Ives Golf Club, with parking, and Bingley Trail Snails helped with marshalling.
A 'virtual' version of the Strider was also held, with 100 people across the UK completing a run or walk on the same day.
Everyone who took part received a bespoke medal, featuring a hedgehog by moonlight.
Race director and co-organiser, David Senior, says: "The first Winter Solstice Strider was a huge success and a fun and unique way of raising vital funds for a good cause.
"Thank you to our hosts, the STRI, and volunteers for making the event such a success – and to everyone who pulled on their trainers and joined us on the day at St Ives estate and across the country.
"We hope to make this an annual event and are seeking a main sponsor to help share the success of the Strider this year."
Manorlands' next run and walk is the Keighley 10k and 5k on Mother's Day – Sunday, March 19.
Since its inception in 2007, more than 10,000 people have taken part and over £450,000 has been raised for the Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice. Last year, 600-plus entrants together coined-in around £22,000.
The 10k starts at Victoria Park and follows a circular multi-terrain route through the town, whilst the 5k sets off from the Fell Lane Scout hut.
Entrants receive a bespoke T-shirt.
Entry fees range from £10 to £18.
