MORE than 1,000 catalytic converters have been stolen from car exhaust systems in the region over the past three years – with a spate of incidents occurring in Keighley.

Thefts of the emissions devices – attractive to criminals for the metal they contain – reached a peak in 2021, according to latest data.

That year there were 660 incidents recorded in West Yorkshire, compared to 270 in 2020.

Last year, the total dropped to 186.

The Keighley News reported on a number of incidents across the town when thefts were at their highest.

Six catalytic converters were stolen from vehicles parked on a car sales forecourt in Lawkholme Lane, and cars parked in other areas – including West Lane and Holme Mill Lane – were also targeted.

The problem is mirrored nationally. Across the UK nearly 100,000 thefts of catalytic converters have been recorded in three years, with criminals stealing 75 per day last year.

West Yorkshire Police say they are "working hard" with other organisations to tackle the crime.

The force's crime prevention lead, Dawn Wilkinson, says: "We understand the impact this crime has on victims, in that it renders their vehicles unusable and can also mean expensive repair bills – something which people could do without during the current financial climate.

"We're working hard with partners, such as car dealerships and forensic property marking companies, to tackle this crime and pursue those responsible.

"We would ask for the public’s help by reporting any suspicious activity people see around a vehicle, particularly if it has been jacked up and the exhaust is being tampered with or removed – especially in places such as shopping centres or hospital car parks where these crimes frequently occur.

"If a crime is in progress, we ask that you do not approach these individuals but immediately call 999.

"We are not complacent and know that those responsible are usually linked to other types of crime, so it is important that we work together to tackle this issue and bring those involved to justice."

To deter thieves, motorists are encouraged where possible to park their car in a locked garage, or if that's not an option, in a well-lit and well-populated area. Where feasible, park close to a fence or wall – with the exhaust nearest to it.

Avoid parking your vehicle half on the pavement, half on the road.
