A RIDDLESDEN dog owner is warning others to be on their guard after her treasured pet was viciously attacked.
Mrs Jacqueline Roast says a Staffy-type dog leapt over a wall and fencing into the back garden of her home and grabbed her dog in its jaws.
The 75-year-old grandmother was pulled to the ground as she attempted to stop the attack.
When she managed to wrest her dog – a Chihuahua, Jack Russell and Yorkshire Terrier cross – away, he was rushed to the vets and underwent surgery that day.
The six-year-old – called Dexter – suffered a broken jaw, which had to be rewired.
Mrs Roast lives alongside the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath, where the attacking dog was being walked when the incident occurred – on the morning of Sunday, February 19.
"It was terrifying and very distressing," she says.
"The person with the dog just walked on.
"I want to warn people to be on their guard.
"My grandchildren would normally be around on a Sunday morning. What if they had been there? I hate to imagine what may have happened.
"Dexter is usually such a happy dog, but I don’t know how this will affect him."
West Yorkshire Police confirm that the incident has been reported to them.
