AN annual Keighley 10k and 5k in aid of Sue Ryder raised £20,000, delighted organisers have announced.

Nearly 800 runners and walkers took part in the event, on Sunday (March 19) - Mother's Day.

Since it was first held 16 years ago, the popular fixture has now coined-in over £500,000 for the charity – which runs Manorlands hospice, at Oxenhope.

This year's event started and finished at Victoria Park and followed new routes, which took in Keighley Golf Club, a stretch of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal towpath and the grounds of historic East Riddlesden Hall.

Support was provided by crowds of spectators and a team of volunteer marshals.

Everyone who took part received a bespoke T-shirt.

First to finish in the men's 10k was Jack Cummings, of Ilkley Harriers, in 31:58.

Helen Smith, of Salford Harriers, was the first female finisher in 37:28.

In the men’s 5k, Samuel Barber of Keighley & Craven Athletics Club was fastest, in 16:42.

And heading the women was fellow Keighley & Craven runner Charlotte Chambers, with a time of 20:28.

Andrew Wood, community fundraising manager at Manorlands, says: "The Keighley 10k and 5k is an event that's been running for many years so it's very much part of the community, and we know that lots of people plan their calendars to ensure they can do it.

"A lot of effort goes into putting this event together and so it was brilliant to see everyone enjoying the new routes with big smiles on their faces.

"We’d like to say a huge 'thank you' to our sponsor Colin Appleyard and everyone who took part and raised crucial funds to help us provide our expert care and bereavement support.

"We would also like to say a special thanks to this year’s race starter Dave Belmont, who has raised an incredible £40,000 for Sue Ryder through taking part in this event over the last ten years."

Manorlands supports patients with life-limiting illnesses and their families at the hospice and in the community, across an area covering Craven, Airedale, Wharfedale and parts of Bradford.

All services are free to patients and loved ones, but it costs £10,000 a day to keep the hospice open.
