A KEIGHLEY manufacturer is celebrating 60 years of trading.
And bosses of family-owned Dobson Gaskets have spoken of their pride at the firm's local heritage.
Sales director Andrew Jeffrey, a native of the town, says: "We’re proud to have a long-established presence in the Keighley manufacturing sector.
"About 90 per cent of our staff are from the Keighley area, and many live within walking distance of the factory.
"It’s important for us to have a role in the local community."
The company was originally founded in Halifax, by Edward Dobson.
But following his death, the business was bought by weaver-overlooker-turned-entrepreneur Fred Woollard, who relocated it to Calversyke Mill in Keighley, under the same roof as his rubber wholesale business.
As the gasket operation grew, Fred purchased Springfield Mill, in Oakworth Road, where he set up production in the flat-roofed section and rented out the remaining space.
Fred’s daughter Joyce joined the firm and began working in the office, and in 1967 her husband Colin Jeffrey, a chartered secretary, also became part of the team. Both went on to become company directors.
Over the following decades, the business established itself as one of the UK’s leading gasket manufacturers.
At various stages during the 1980s and 90s, Colin and Joyce’s sons Peter, Andrew and Robert joined the firm, learning the ropes before taking up directorships.
In the 1990s the company achieved Bs5750 accreditation and began producing metal gaskets for the first time, investing in computer-aided design software and machines to improve productivity.
The expanding business outgrew its Springfield Mill base and after half a century at the site, moved to a new purpose-built facility on the Holme Mill industrial estate.
Dobson Gaskets now has a 38-strong workforce.
"The move to a custom production facility has made a big difference not least in allowing us the space to grow," says Andrew.
"We’ve been able to invest in a range of high-tech equipment that has helped improve productivity, and take on new staff."
Over the decades the company has expanded its customer base in the UK and worldwide.
Gaskets are now produced for a variety of sectors.
Last year the firm also saw growth in the specialist area of vintage vehicle gaskets, producing over 1,000 head gaskets for classic car clubs and individuals.
"We have a fantastic team," Andrew adds. "Without our staff’s hard work and dedication, we wouldn't be where we are today."
