EVENTS are taking place across Keighley tomorrow (Monday, May 8) as part of The Big Help Out.

The national initiative, being held to tie in with the coronation weekend, is seeing thousands of organisations giving people the chance to volunteer in their communities.

Keighley district Scouts are staging a volunteering day at the Low Wood Scout Camping & Activity Centre, in Elam Wood Road, Riddlesden.

People can go along between 9am and 12.30pm, for the whole morning or whatever time they're able to give, to help with a range of tasks – from fencing, gardening and stream clearing to shelter building and cleaning.

A spokesperson said: "Volunteering days are great fun and rewarding, and are vital in helping us to keep the Low Wood site up and running. We couldn't exist without our fantastic volunteers. Please come along and join in!"

Refreshments will be available.

The Age UK shop in Cavendish Street, Keighley, is also marking the venture by opening its doors to potential volunteers.

Two-hour taster sessions are being held during the day for anyone interested in helping out.

Shop manager Denise Roberts says: "Volunteers are crucial to Age UK. As well as helping with the essential operations and day-to-day running of the shop, they also offer a friendly welcome and chat to many members of the local community who stop by."

And volunteers are invited to go along to St Andrew's graveyard at Cowling to help clear paths and improve access to the site.

People are welcome for any amount of time, from 10am, and are asked to take suitable tools.

Drinks and biscuits will be available.

Anyone staying all day should take a packed lunch or a contribution to a shared lunch.

Access is from the end of Pinnacle View.
