MORE celebratory activities have been taking place across the Keighley area as part of the extended coronation weekend.
Yesterday (May 7), Lees cum Cross Roads Village Association staged a Big Lunch.
The event – in Cross Roads Park – included free food, children’s crafts and games, and entertainment from an African drumming group.
Funding support was provided by Asda.
Bev Underwood, for the association, said: “The event was really well attended and the weather was fantastic. There were lots of smiling faces.”
Haworth Riding for the Disabled held a tea party, supported by Bradford Council. Commemorative coronation rosettes were presented to all the riders and volunteers.
Newly re-elected Keighley West councillor Julie Lintern celebrated by delivering sweet treats to residents on three appropriately named streets in her ward – Coronation Way, Coronation Walk and Coronation Mount.
She said: “There are only three residential streets in the Bradford district which were named in honour of the coronation in 1953 and they are all in Keighley West ward. I didn’t want to miss this opportunity to celebrate with residents on these special streets.”
The ‘Silsden balls’ were given a patriotic makeover to mark the occasion.
The bollards, in Keighley Road, received a Union Flag repainting.
Silsden town mayor Cllr Mags Croft and deputy mayor Cllr Rebecca Whitaker were “absolutely delighted”.
“They look fantastic!” they said. “Residents have shared their appreciation and told us how much they enjoy seeing these distinctive ‘balls’, and are very pleased with how much smarter they’re now looking. We thank the Bradford Council officer for her help in co-ordinating this project with Silsden Town Council.”
Members of the newly-formed Cross Roads Parish Council were invited to Lees Primary School for a celebratory picnic lunch. Councillors also presented coronation bears to Lees Primary pupils, and pre-school children.
Next Monday (May 15), Haworth and District Women’s Institute is inviting people to join members for a celebratory cup of tea and piece of cake, to mark the coronation and the 75th anniversary of the group. The event is at West Lane Baptist Church, West Lane, Haworth, at 7.30pm.
