A photo taken by Amina Abu El Hawa, who works in the hospital's emergency department, has reached the finals of a national competition celebrating 75 years of the NHS.

She took the picture, of healthcare support worker Anisha Javaid alongside paramedics Paul Dearden and Deb Helliwell, during the pandemic.

"When I heard about the photography competition and saw a category for 'Partners' I knew I had to capture the relationship we share with our colleagues in the ambulance service," says Amina.

"We share so many experiences together and are always there for one another. I feel this photo encapsulates that bond.

"I was extremely excited to be shortlisted, especially after seeing the quality of entries. They are amazing! I feel very proud."

Hundreds of health service staff and volunteers across the country entered the contest, organised by NHS England in partnership with Fujifilm UK.

Seventy-five photos were shortlisted, all of which will be displayed at Fujifilm House of Photography in Covent Garden, London. The exhibition opens to the public on Wednesday (July 5), 75 years to the day since the NHS was established.

Dame Ruth May, chief nursing officer for England, was among the six judges.

She said: "We were amazed at the quality of photographs submitted. It’s incredible to see the way entrants have documented life in the NHS.

"The compassion, the ingenuity, the camaraderie, the good times and when it gets tough – it was all captured across the five categories and it’s a really fitting way to mark 75 years of the NHS."

Tom Watanabe, managing director of Fujifilm UK, says: "We are delighted that so many NHS staff and volunteers have had the chance to tell their stories through these powerful images.

"As an organisation that started in photography and has worked in healthcare for over 80 years, delivering diagnostic imaging and medical devices, we were uniquely placed to work with the NHS to run this competition and are delighted that the public will be able to come to the exhibition and pay tribute to our wonderful health service."

Each of the finalists has been invited to a special ceremony at Fujifilm House of Photography next week to formally unveil all the photos.

Category winners are also due to be announced, with the top five photos scheduled for display at an NHS 75th anniversary service in Westminster Abbey.
