A QUILT in memory of people lost to suicide has gone on display at Haworth as part of a tour of the county.

The Yorkshire Speak Their Name Memorial Quilt is being exhibited at the parish church.

Four giant panels feature on the quilt, and each contains 48 squares dedicated to lost loved ones.

A launch event at Haworth Parish Church was attended by community representatives from across the Worth Valley and local MP Robbie Moore.

The quilt has already been on show at locations including York, Beverley and Hull minsters, plus Bradford, Ripon and Wakefield cathedrals.

It will spend most of this month in Haworth, before heading to Leeds Rhinos rugby league club, Yarndale in Skipton and Leeds Teaching Hospitals.

Haworth-based Anna Scott is a director of the group behind the initiative.

She said: "We’re delighted to have the exhibition in Haworth Church.

"The quilt project started last year, and we’ve been exhibiting since October. It’s an ongoing project for us as we’re now collecting squares to put on our next panel.

"We were fortunate to secure funding for the project from the National Lottery and, as well as exhibiting the quilt, we’re staging workshops across Yorkshire."

Rector of Haworth, the Rev Oli Preston, says: "Suicide affects so many people, so we’re really pleased to have the Yorkshire Speak Their Name Memorial Quilt exhibition in our church.

"As part of the exhibition's stay in Haworth, we’ll be holding regular ‘tea and chat’ sessions – details of when they are to be held can be found by visiting our website at haworthchurch.co.uk."

Also being staged is a special evening where people can view the panels and consider the issue of suicide prevention.

The event is on Sunday, August 13, from 7pm to 8.30pm.

"Part of the evening will include a memorial service for anyone who has been bereaved, impacted or touched in any way by suicide," adds the Rev Preston. "It will bring people together and give them time to reflect."

Haworth Parish Church is open daily between 10am and 4pm, and admission to the exhibition is free.
