A MAJOR new event is being held in Keighley.
Organisers say Keighley Carnival will have "traditional elements of a gala – but with a modern twist".
The theme of the event – on Saturday, September 9, and Sunday, September 10 – is The Greatest Showman.
There will be a parade around Victoria Park starting at noon on the Saturday, and a stage show, market and funfair.
A gala committee that formed prior to the pandemic to help raise funds for charity Living Lights, which runs a foodbank and outreach service, has reformed to create the carnival.
The event was originally due to be held last year, but was cancelled out of respect following the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II. There were also delays to the plans due to pandemic restrictions.
"The Greatest Showman theme was chosen for the carnival as it's about inclusiveness and it is hoped members of Keighley's diverse communities will enjoy the event together," says Patrick McDonnell, founder and director of Living Lights and former chair of the carnival committee.
"The committee has received tremendous support so far, and we've some fantastic professional bands and acts taking part in the Saturday stage show.
"There is a funfair as well as the stage show at Victoria Park, where the parade – led by a life-size animatronic elephant – will end and the greatest show will begin!
"Entry to the event is free, and tokens will be on sale for the funfair.
"Sunday is a family fundamental day, with circus and magician acts that children will enjoy.
"I am delighted that this family-friendly event is taking place, after the delays due to Covid restrictions and the sad passing of her Majesty last year."
Funds raised through the carnival will go towards the work of Living Lights, Keighley-based small animal rescue Furever Loved and Oxenhope Sue Ryder hospice Manorlands.
Mr McDonnell added: "The committee is hoping that local churches, schools and businesses will get behind the fundraising as well. We're keen for the community to become involved to make this a great day for Keighley."
Anyone wishing to get involved can call 07830 855544 or email keighleycc22@gmail.com.
Until recently Mr McDonnell chaired the carnival committee, but he has handed over the role – to Irena Harrison – to focus more on his work with Living Lights, which is seeing increasing demand from needy families. He remains vice chair.
