KEIGHLEY people are being urged to apply for a free carbon monoxide alarm.
Northern Gas Networks has launched a 'festive giveaway' of 5,000 devices.
Carbon monoxide – or CO – is a poisonous, odourless gas which can leak from badly fitted or poorly maintained appliances, flues, chimneys and blocked vents.
Eileen Brown, for Northern Gas Networks, says: "Cases of CO poisoning increase in the winter, including over the festive period, when people tend to spend more time indoors using cookers, fires, boilers and wood burners.
"We’re urging our customers to learn more about the dangers of CO and apply for a free alarm, either for themselves or a loved one.
"CO poisoning kills around 60 people and hospitalises 4,000 every year in the UK, so helping people protect themselves from it is a key priority for us.
"The alarms are activated when CO is detected in the air, to alert you of the danger."
Signs of CO poisoning can include headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse or loss of consciousness.
The alarm giveaway ends on Wednesday, January 3, or sooner should all 5,000 be claimed before then.
