A CELEBRATORY event at Victoria Hall in Keighley was brill – and that's official!

The 'I Am Brill' disco marked the culmination of a project which saw a series of workshops staged across the town, where children took part in craftwork to display their creative talents.

Inspiration for the initiative was a light installation venture by award-winning Keighley-born writer and artist Letty McHugh.

She designed the 'Let Brilliant Talents Shine Forth' installation which currently adorns the front of Keighley Library.

Her design was brought to life and installed by Keighley-based company, Christmas Plus.

Hundreds of families attended the free disco, organised by arts charity Keighley Creative.

"The disco was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone," says event director, Aimee Grundell.

"It was the culmination of numerous creative workshops held over the previous few months, where local children were encouraged to make their own unique creations.

"Descriptions of the disco by attendees included 'excellent', 'energetic' and 'inclusive'.

"Partygoers were greeted on arrival with snowfall, balloons and a red carpet – and then spent the evening dancing, crafting, drawing, fishing and limboing!

"Children could win prizes for their achievements, including unique I Am Brill T-shirts and posters, and sweets donated by Asda. Performers included drummers Punjabi Roots, stilt-walkers, Chicks on Sticks, DJs and dancers from Unique Cheer and Dance.

"The work of Dr Seuss was used to inspire the decorations around the hall, and 'Seussian' themed snacks were provided by Caterpillar Catering. The event was manned by the team from Keighley Creative, alongside lots of enthusiastic volunteers.

"The disco was everything we hoped it would be – fun, inspiring and celebratory. It created an opportunity for children and families to feel confident, get creative and recognise that they're brilliant!"

She said feedback was "overwhelmingly positive", with one attendee posting: "Thank you for such an amazing disco. My seven-year-old and I loved it! It was such a great way to spend a miserable Friday night in January. You could see so much hard work went into it. As a single parent to two, and a mature student, it was nice to be able to do something that good locally that was also free. Thank you."

The project was supported by various organisations, including The Leap, Bradford Council and Toy Lab, as well as the Levelling Up Fund.
