THE Woman King is the latest offering from Keighley Film Club.
The movie was inspired by true events that took place in the African kingdom of Dahomey.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Woman King tells the story of the Agojie – an all-female unit of warriors which protected Dahomey in the 1800s – and the emotional journey of General Nanisca, played by Oscar-winning Viola Davis, as she trains the next generation of recruits.
The film – which has a 15 certificate and runs for 135 minutes – also stars Thuso Mbedu as Nawi, who fights within the unit led by Nanisca.
Alan Watkinson, for the film club, says: "Review website Rotten Tomatoes gives The Woman King 94 per cent and describes it as 'an extremely skilful, well-crafted picture telling a narrative of empowerment; a social experiment of equality while condemning slavery'.
"The historical accuracy of the film is due to original records of the Agojie community which were kept by Nawi, and a professor from Princetown University USA who agreed to act as the film's consultant."
The Keighley screening is at the Picture House, North Street, on Sunday, March 17. Doors open at 5.35pm, and the film starts at 6pm.
