SUPPORT is at hand for smokers seeking to stub out the habit.

The message was issued by regional health chiefs to coincide with national No Smoking Day, which this year marked its 40th anniversary.

NHS figures show that smoking rates have fallen over the years, but there are still more than 5.3 million adults in England who smoke.

In 2022-23, an estimated 400,000 hospital admissions across the country were due to conditions related to smoking.

Rachel Johns, deputy regional director of public health with the NHS, says: "Smoking is still the single largest preventable cause of death in England, but the good news is that it is much easier to stop when you get the right support – and there are lots of options available to choose from. Getting expert support from your local 'stop smoking' services means you are three times more likely to quit for good.

"And it’s never too late to stop smoking. When you do, there are almost immediate improvements to your health. Even if you have tried before, it is worth another go because lots of people give up for good after more than one attempt."
