PERMISSION is being sought to carry out urgently-needed repairs to a crumbling building at Keighley railway station.

Network Rail has applied for listed building consent so work can go ahead on the Platform One waiting shelter.

Long-awaited refurbishments are currently underway on the wider station site.

But Network Rail says that without urgent attention, the waiting shelter could become unsafe.

The structure's gables are in poor condition and stonework is "showing signs of displacement", the firm says.

It adds: "The proposed work will ensure the waiting room's longevity and be of benefit to rail passengers by enabling access to heated waiting facilities once repairs are completed.

"The Grade II listed shelter building holds both historic and communal significance, sitting within Keighley Station – which is an important example of railway development both past and present.

"The presence of the adjacent preserved Keighley & Worth Valley Railway and its associated period features holds historic value, whilst the station frontage provides attractive architectural detailing adding to the aesthetic value of the site.

"If left unchecked, the shelter defects could result in the failure of the gables and further deterioration of the structure, rendering it unsafe for use as a passenger waiting facility."
