A KEIGHLEY opticians is urging people to take part in a challenge aimed at improving children's literacy skills.

Participants in the Race for Reading event have the target of collectively walking, swimming or cycling 25,000 miles.

Specsavers, whose Keighley branch is in the Airedale Shopping Centre, is backing the initiative.

Proceeds will help the charity Schoolreaders expand its provision of reading support in schools.

It currently has 155 volunteers working across nearly 90 schools in Yorkshire.

Neil Liddle, for Specsavers, says: "We are delighted to partner with Schoolreaders for the Race for Reading event and would urge as many people as possible to sign up.

"As the majority of what is taught in schools is presented visually, good eye health and strong reading skills are both vital elements needed to ensure little ones keep on learning, which is why we’re pleased to work closely with Schoolreaders across Yorkshire."

Jane Whitbread, founder and chief executive officer of Schoolreaders, says: "We're thrilled to welcome Specsavers as the headline sponsor for our Race for Reading event.

"Specsavers' commitment to children’s health and education aligns perfectly with our mission."
