A SUMMER of sporting activities has kicked off at Keighley Salvation Army.

A host of events is taking place at the High Street church and community centre to celebrate an array of sports spectacles – including the Euros football tournament, Wimbledon and Paris Olympics.

Activities range from sporting quizzes and the chance to watch matches, to a themed Sunday service.

Keighley Salvation Army leader, Major Imogen Stewart, says: "Part of our mission is to enjoy community life with each other, so we're really excited about this programme of events which will bring us all together to celebrate a brilliant summer of sports.

"We kickstarted it with a treasure hunt, barbecue and indoor Olympic-themed activities for kids. It was a blessing to see so many people there with us enjoying themselves.

"We are showing some of the matches as well as hosting sports quizzes and a Sunday worship with a sporting theme looking at the attitudes of Eric Liddle, who won gold at the Paris Olympics 100 years ago running in his least favoured event, and his rival Harold Abrahams, focusing on Paul’s challenge (1 Corinthians 9: 24-25) to run for the greater prize, only found in Jesus.

"As well as bringing people together, these events are a chance to show what Keighley Salvation Army has on offer for the community. We run a number of activities and support schemes which people will be able to ask us about. The events are open to everyone, so please do come along."

She adds: "As a church and charity, the Salvation Army is passionate about sports and the benefits they have for physical and mental health; as well as enjoying the outdoors, it can be an opening for spiritual conversation and new relationships within our communities.

"This year the Salvation Army launched a Goals for Good campaign, encouraging people to help end homelessness through football. For more information, visit salvationarmy.org.uk/goalsforgood."

Tomorrow (June 28), the Keighley church is hosting a Euro quiz, at 7pm.

Next Friday (July 5) there will be a sport-themed family film night, at 7pm.

Sports quizzes take place on July 12 and August 2, at 7pm, and there's a sporting service on Sunday, July 21, at 10.30am.
