STUDENTS from two Keighley-area schools moved up a gear in their quest to build the ultimate electric racing car.
Pupils from Oastlers School Keighley and Parkside at Cullingworth competed in a first-ever race day challenge organised by Bradford College and Greenpower Education Trust.
The youngsters were up against students from four other schools across the Bradford district.
In January this year, an electric kit car – donated by Bradford College – was delivered to each participating school.
Teams then had seven months to build their vehicles.
And the challenge culminated with a race day at the Blyton Park track near Gainsborough, in Lincolnshire.
After last-minute checks on the cars, practice laps were staged ahead of the showpiece race.
Despite coming third in practice, first over the race finish line was a team from BBG Academy, in Birkenshaw.
Oastlers School Keighley, with 'Lightning', was second.
It was followed by Dixons City Academy and Hanson Academy, both Bradford.
Tong Leadership Academy and Parkside School completed the line up.
The initiative was aimed at developing students' interest in Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) subjects, as well as building skills such as teamwork.
Anita Ladva-Cheung, head of student recruitment and external relations at Bradford College, says: "Working with Greenpower to bring electric racing to the schools of Bradford district this year was a fulfilling experience for everyone involved.
"It's been amazing to see pupils develop their interest in STEM, whilst also building skills like teamwork and communication.
"We look forward to having more Bradford-district schools involved next year!"
Lindsey Dodsworth, the college's schools liaison officer, described the venture as "a rousing success".
She added: "All the schools involved engaged with the college and worked so hard over the seven months – we loved it.
"This isn’t just about racing though, it’s about showcasing all the opportunities and routes available to young people across the district. With this in mind, it hasn’t just been a success for the college, but also a huge win for Bradford. The focus now is very much on next year, when we’ll hopefully welcome back this year’s schools as well as plenty more."
Ian Aindow, from BBG Academy, said: "Thank you so much to Bradford College for this opportunity. Our students and staff had an amazing time."
