EXPERTS in Japanese swords descended on Keighley's Cliffe Castle at the weekend.

Members of the Token Society of Great Britain visited the museum on Saturday to share their knowledge.

And the study day was described as a success by organisers.

Society representatives examined the sword collection held by the Spring Gardens Lane museum, and provided more information about the items.

The Token Society, which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary, is dedicated to the study and preservation of Japanese swords.

Members include Ernest Cockburn, a volunteer researcher at Cliffe Castle.

He says: "The study day went very well.

"All the Token Society members were delighted to see our sword collection.

"And in fact, subject to confirmation, it was deemed that a couple of the swords may be worthy of re-polishing in Japan."

Paul Bowman, for the society, said it was "delighted" to be given the opportunity to examine the museum's collection.

He added: "We try to arrange days in partnership with museums to enable members to study swords held within museum collections. This also offers specialist assistance to museums to describe their artefacts."
