A TRAINER released by global sportswear giant Adidas has been named after Lawkholme in Keighley – thanks to a Bradford-district man’s suggestion.
Last October, Adidas fan Craig Bell contacted Gary Aspden – who designs and curates shoes in the Adidas Spezial line – and suggested that a new trainer in the range be called ‘Lawkholme’.
Gary liked the name Craig put forward – and the Lawkholme SPZL has now been created.
Craig, 34, said he suggested ‘Lawkholme’ in honour of Lawkholme Lane in Keighley, where the Peter Black factory used to be located.
Peter Black had the rights to make Adidas sports bags.
Craig, of Allerton, said: “An Adidas shoe now exists with a Bradford-district name.
“I am so proud about this.
“It is a real nod to the area’s history.
“I was absolutely over the moon when I found out Gary had used my suggestion.
“He is well-known for using northern locations as names on the SPZL shoes of the Adidas Spezial brand.”
Craig added: “It is a lovely shoe.
“I’ve got a pair – they look great and are very comfortable.”
Unveiling the Lawkholme SPZL on Instagram, Gary said: “The name ‘Lawkholme’ was suggested by an Adidas fan (and was one of the few that cleared legally this season) – it comes from Lawkholme Lane which is where the now demolished Peter Black factory was located in Keighley.”
The 10th anniversary of the Adidas Spezial brand was celebrated earlier this year.
Gary, from Darwen, in Lancashire, was raised on Adidas, wearing the trainers as a youngster and witnessing the label’s impact on the football and dance club cultures which dominated northern England. He joined the company in the 1990s.
The Lawkholme SPZL is now on sale, and the trainers are described on the Adidas website as “shoes with a familiar silhouette and an unexpected twist”.
It adds: “A pivot from the well-known, these Adidas shoes pair a clean leather and suede upper with an absence of three stripes.
“An EVA midsole delivers comfort with each step, and a rubber outsole rounds out the streamlined profile.”
Reviews are very favourable for the Lawkholme SPZL on the Adidas website.
One person said: “A really nice casual trainer. The leather and suede upper has a nice feel to it and looks great.”
Another added: “The quality of the shoes blew me away. Do not hesitate, just buy. You won’t regret it!”
