KEIGHLEY Playhouse is launching its new season with a comedy written by acclaimed playwright Bob Larbey.

Sand Castles is being presented at the Devonshire Street theatre from Monday, September 2, until Saturday, September 7.

The playhouse promises "a week of laughter and heartwarming moments".

"We are thrilled to announce Sand Castles as our opening production of the new season – it is a hilarious and witty comedy," says a spokesperson.

"The play takes the audience on a delightful journey to a quintessential British seaside resort where holidaymakers and locals intersect in a series of humorous and touching interactions.

"Bob Larbey is known for his sharp wit and keen observations of everyday life, and his script delivers a perfect blend of comedy and poignancy, making Sand Castles a timeless piece that resonates with audiences of all ages.

"The play is set somewhere on the north coast, where the Pattersons, Billets and Woodersons have spent many previous summer holidays in adjoining beach huts. But this year the Woodersons have let their hut for the season, so a renter will be moving into the hut in the middle.

"The Pattersons are a retired professional couple, William – played by Piers Hill – and Margaret (Barbara Boothroyd), whose secret doesn't emerge until the final minutes of the play.

"Upmarket car salesman Stan Billet (Dean Harness) is not half as sure of himself as he thinks he is, so when the renter – Doug (Ashley Judge) – turns out to be resourceful, wealthy and attractive to Stan's hitherto insecure young sister-in-law, Stan is shaken to his core.

"Not even a wall of plastic flowers can protect his little world from the energetic incomer, with his young nieces (Emma Victoria Smith and Faye Kelk). Doug just doesn't get it that there is a certain protocol to owning a beach hut.

"Stan's wife Bernice (Wendy Todd) is so used to protecting her sister Pauline (Hannah Douglass) from potential heartbreak that she hasn't noticed Pauline has a mind of her own. And mother (Alison Rooks), with her hat and overcoat, bad legs and urgent bladder, isn't half as batty as everybody thinks she is.

"Sand Castles is sure to be a memorable experience for all."

The production is directed by Mike Ellison.
