A UKRAINIAN teenager who settled in Silsden after fleeing his war-torn homeland is amongst students celebrating outstanding GCSE results.

Oles Kuzomko came to the UK with his mother, Mila, in May, 2022.

He managed to gain an assisted place at Bradford Grammar School, and has now achieved 10 GCSEs – three at Grade 8, five 7s and two 6s.

"I’m really proud of my physics and biology grades in particular and I’m so grateful to Bradford Grammar School – especially the teachers who've helped me on an individual basis," says Oles, 16.

"I had all the support I needed and one-on-one encouragement."

Despite having to adapt to a new language, culture and educational system whilst studying for his GCSEs, he also earned a Ukrainian Certificate of Secondary Education after passing online exams.

And Oles has had to cope with immense personal loss.

His father Roman, who remained in Ukraine, died from sepsis last June. And Oles also lost his grandfather and great-grandfather within a short period of time.

Mila says: "Moving to a new country, leaving behind everything familiar and dealing with the personal loss of our loved ones has been tough. But seeing Oles achieve his results has made life worthwhile.

"We're deeply thankful to Bradford Grammar School for its support and for providing him with the opportunity to succeed."

Headmaster Simon Hinchliffe said: "Oles' extraordinary accomplishments are a testament to his dedication and determination to succeed against all odds."

Oles – whose sister Yaryna also now lives in Silsden – next plans to study psychology, business and history at A-level and take an Extended Project Qualification, with aspirations to enter law or management.

Pupils at South Craven School, Cross Hills, have earned high praise for their results – in both GCSEs and Level 2 vocational qualifications.

Headteacher, Martyn Hill, said: "We're very proud of the achievements of our Year 11 students and I would like to congratulate every single one of them for their hard work, focus, resilience and fabulous attitudes throughout their time in school.

"I'd also like to thank parents for their strong support of the school – and our staff, who worked so hard to help our students achieve their potential and drive their ambition."

Head of Year 11, Richard Hughes, said: "I am so proud of the year group's achievements. The students deserve their success. I wish them all the best for the future."
